A Nickel and a Kopek is a long term personal project documenting the adoption of a four year old boy from St. Petersburg, Russia, his relationship to our biological son, and the subsequent transformation of our adoptive family. The project is an ongoing celebration of discovery, of posing more questions than uncovering answers, and summoning the grace to live with change and personal loss. Letters to Sergei’s birth mother (with no intent to mail) provide another creative means to examine his life and articulate the difficult questions regarding events in her life in St. Petersburg which led to her crucial decision regarding her child. The project began on November 7, 2001 flying out of Boston's Logan airport.
